In April 2004 we visited Protasi in Patra in Greece. It is a harbour and university city at Peloponesos. We saw Athens and then travelled by bus to Patra. Everywhere we saw constructors and new buildings – everything was for the Olympic games that will take place in Greece this summer.
We were interested to know about the Greek school system.
Here are our questions:
- How many years are compulsary schooling?
- How many years are upper secondary school?
Answer: Nine years are compulsary and t hree years are upper secondary.
Reflections: exactly the same in our two countries.
- What happens to drop outs?
Answer: At our school system w e don`t have many drop outs!
Reflection: Strange – in Sweden we have a lot of drop outs.
- Do students get grants? How much?
Answer: No they don`t.
Reflection: Strange – how do they survive? We always complain that the grants are too low.
- Do you pay your school books?
Answer: No we don`t, but we pay extra lessons and books in private institutions if we want to get to the university. Our preparation for the university usually starts at the first year of the three upper secondary school.
- Is there free lunch in school?
Answer: No there is not.
- Are many young people unemployed in your country?
Answer: Yes
- Where do most young people find jobs?
Answer: In shops and in caferetias.
- If you don`t come in time to lessons in schools – what will happen?
Answer: You can get in to the classroom if you want, but you get an absence.
Reflections: Well, it seems good to go to school in Greece, but we don`t want to move. We are used to free lunch and we are not used to take extra lessons.
We have interviewed the group SEVACH at Protasi; Niki, Georgia, Michalis, Vasilis, Giannis, Eleni.
We visited the center Protasi and the Olympia city.
The center Protasi is a center for young people to make projects to have a good life. The idea is to keep away from drugs.
We liked Greece and the Greek people – but the weather was not hot and warm which made us estonished.
Thanks to all group SEVACH for making such a wonderful time for us in Greece and good luck in the Olympics.
Razan, Alexander, Emilie, Andreja, Jacek, Cecilia, Catherina.
