Finnish school system is different from the Swedish. In Finland pupils study nine years like in Sweden and after that the students go only one extra year if they need better marks. In Sweden they could study four extra more years in grammar school.Finnish school system, after grammar school, is divided into two parts; one in theoretical and the other in vocational school.  Most students in Riihimaki were fed up with school. They wanted to find a job or to go to a better school. Some of them wanted just to relax.

We met two teachers Jussi and Juha in Riihimaki the last week in January. They began at eight o´clock to help the students with motivation, courses (subjects) and other problems.

The school in Riihimaki is a training school. The students help people in the neighbourhood with the repairing of cars, computers and other things. The school has students working togheter with companies.

Comparing the Finnish school with the Swedish school (Gymnasiet), it can be observed that the Swedish school presents clearer limits between vocational school and theoretical education. Furthermore the Finnish students have only one year after grammar school to decide which direction they want to take in the future.

My students’ opinions were that the Finnish students have more computers and they didn´t like to speak Swedish although every Finnish student has studied Swedish
